March Young Artist Winner - Hudson Yeager

This issue’s featured Young Artist Award recipient is seventeen-year-old trumpeter Hudson Yeager, a junior at Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Alabama. Hudson’s musical journey began in sixth grade, continuing a family tradition of trumpet playing that spans multiple generations, including his mother, aunt, and grandmother, who were all trumpet players. Growing up in a musically active household, he was surrounded by encouragement and support, which helped nurture his love for music from an early age.

Hudson’s trumpet playing has been mentored by several impactful instructors, including middle school band director, Brandon Peters; his current high school band director, Mark Knauss; and, most recently, his private instructor, Bradley Sargent. Dr. Sargent notes that Hudson’s work ethic and attention to detail distinguish him as one of the most outstanding students he has taught.

At Hewitt-Trussville High School, Hudson is principal trumpet in the wind ensemble, lead trumpet in the top jazz ensemble, and section leader in the marching band. His leadership extends beyond his own ensembles; he has mentored younger players as a band aide at the middle school level and demonstrates a commitment to his academics as an honors student pursuing multiple AP courses.

Hudson’s dedication to performance has been recognized at both the regional and state levels. He earned placement in the Alabama Bandmasters Association District IV Honor Band and has been selected for multiple summer programs, including the University of Alabama Summer Honor Band, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Summer Band, and the Columbus State University Schwob Brass Festival. These experiences have provided valuable opportunities to study with prominent teachers and to broaden his understanding of trumpet performance at a professional level.

A developing passion for jazz has further expanded Hudson’s musical perspective, but he enjoys listening to everything. His favorite trumpet players include Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, and Caleb Hudson, whose blend of virtuosity and expressiveness continues to influence Yeager’s playing.
Outside of music, Hudson maintains an active lifestyle as a member of the Hewitt-Trussville golf team and enjoys spending time with family on the golf course. He also balances his academic and musical commitments with part-time work, demonstrating a high level of personal responsibility and time management.

Looking ahead, Hudson hopes to pursue a career that will include music and continued study of the trumpet. His exemplary work ethic and trumpet playing distinguish him as an outstanding recipient of the ITG Young Artist Award and a promising young musician.

As the March 2026 ITG Young Artist Award winner, Hudson will receive a one-year complimentary ITG membership. Congratulations, Hudson!
