Eastern New Mexico University Trumpet Day features Raquel Samayoa and New Mexico Trumpet Faculty

The Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) Trumpet Day was a rewarding day of music-making, pedagogy, and camaraderie. Dr. Raquel Samayoa (University of North Texas) was the headlining guest artist, with Dr. Sidney Shuler organizing the event. Guest performers also included Dr. John Marchiando (University of New Mexico) and Dr. Jacob Dalager (New Mexico State University).

The day began with Shuler leading a group warm-up for all attendees, drawing on the pedagogical approaches of Max Schlossberg, James Stamp, and Edwin Franko Goldman. Following the warm-up, Samayoa led a masterclass featuring performances by members of the ENMU Trumpet Studio. Her comments addressed both technical and musical considerations and fostered an engaging and supportive learning environment.

In the afternoon, the ITG Affiliate Recital featured the New Mexico Trumpet Guild officers performing selected works. Marchiando began with Fernande Decruck’s Suite Renaissance, followed by Shuler’s performance of Concertino in E-flat by Ernst Sachse. Dalager concluded the solo portion of the program with movements from his own composition, Suite Analogique. The three professors then collaborated on three movements from Nico Samitz’s 12 Crossover Trios. Closing out the recital was a performance of Within Sacred Walls by Erik Morales, performed by a mass trumpet ensemble.

The evening concert featured Samayoa with collaborative pianist Kayla Liechty. Her energetic program spanned repertoire from the Baroque era to works composed in the last twenty years and her performance demonstrated both virtuosity and expressive depth. To conclude the event, Samayoa invited Shuler to join her for the final movement of Kevin McKee’s Under Western Skies. (Source: Sidney Shuler)
