Brazil Jazz Trumpet Festival

Brazil's Jazz Trumpet Festival (JTF) is a trumpet festival focused on jazz and commercial music. Founded in 2013, the JTF is organized in São Paulo, Brazil by the São Paulo Trumpet Guild (ITG Affiliate Chapter) that has as organizers Otávio Nestares, Bruno Garcia Fermiano, Felippe Freire, and Marcos Braga.

The Jazz Trumpet Festival has received international artists as Eric Miyashiro, Jon Faddis, Bobby Shew, Adam Rapa, Allen Vizzutti, Thomas Gansch, Byron Stripling, Greg Gisbert, Rex Richardson, Trent Austin and others. The sixth edition of the JTF was held at Faculdade Santa Marcelina in Sao Paulo, Brazil, October 22-26, 2018. The guest artists included Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker (Yamaha Brazil), Rubén Simeó (FIDES), Gileno Santana (Schagerl) and Diego Garbin. Over 260 trumpet players attended the event.

The festival began on Monday, January 22, 2018, with a workshop “Horn Maintenance” by a Yamaha Brazil technician. In the afternoon, Felipe Aires taught a class about the blues. This was followed by Basic Fundamentals class by Marcos Motta and Fernando Lopez. In another classroom, Sylas Xavier presented a class “Superchops - Jerome Callet”. That evening, Bruno Soares coached a beginner trumpet
ensemble that performed a prelude what was followed by Gileno Santana Ensemble.

On Tuesday, October 23, Albert Santos led an early-morning warm-up session. Rubén Simeó gave the first masterclass of the day about trumpet basic fundamentals. In the afternoon, Paulo Jordão taught a
Lead Trumpet workshop. Following Jordão, João Lenhari coached a Brazilian music trumpet section practicing. In another room, at the same time, Bruno Belasco presented an introduction to improvisation. That evening, Edílson Nery conduted the intermediate trumpet ensemble that performed a Prelude that was followed by Randy Brecker´s combo.

In the third day, October 24, Roberto Gastaldi led an early-morning warm-up session. After that, Randy Brecker gave a workshop about his career and approach to the trumpet. In the afternoon, Diego Garbin presented an improvisation workshop. Following Garbin, Marcelo Matos gave a “Music and Trumpet” master class. In another classroom, Raphael Sampaio gave a clinic about Scales and Chico Oliveira conducted a fun conversation about his career. That evening, the Floreio Sextet formed by female trumpet players of different states of Brazil played in the Prelude with participation of Arturo Sandoval and Rubén Simeó. And then, Rubén Simeó performed a recital with piano and Diego Garbin performed with Noneto de Casa.

On Thursday, October 25, Clóvis Beltrami led an early-morning warm-up session. Arturo Sandoval presented trumpet class and answered a lot of questions. In the afternoon, Fernando Dissenha presented the master class, “Integrated Practice." Following him, Wagner Félix gave a lesson to beginner trumpet players. That evening, Marcelo Matos conducted the advanced trumpet ensemble performing in the prelude. Arturo Sandoval performed the main concert with Speakin´Jazz Big Band.

On Friday, October 26, Thiago Araújo led an early-morning warm-up session. Gileno Santana taught master class. In the afternoon, Terry Warburton gave a clinic about mouthpieces. Following Warburton, Wili Fonseca and Paulo Viveiro taught masterclasses. Clóvis Beltrami led a trumpet ensemble rehearsal. Participants had the opportunity to visit exhibitors, including Yamaha Brazil, Torelli, Warburton Music Products, Conn-Selmer, B&S, Strongbrass, Engelman Mouthpieces, Temppus Case, Grilo Musical and Padovani Instruments.
